Mission Statement

None of the Above is a not-for-profit, affordable, accessible theater company dedicated to honoring the great city of New York. As the wonderful novelist and essayist E.B. White penned in his transcendent column for the New Yorker in 1949, “It is to the nation what the white church spire is to the village, the visible symbol of aspiration and faith, the white plume saying that the way is up.”

Nothing is more representative of this notion than the world of theater. None of the Above will devote itself exclusively to producing plays about some aspect of New York City life, plays that will illuminate the rich tapestry of New York’s people and how they live their lives.

01

Originality

We wish to do original work—new plays, new voices, new risks.

02

Accessibility

We wish to be affordable and accessible to all—because theatre is a public good.

03

Identity

We will do only plays that depict some aspect of New York City life—its humor, pressure, and poetry.

The founders
History

Mary & Robert

In August 1981, in a bank line at Kings Highway & McDonald Avenue, two artists decided the city deserved its own mirror—one that didn’t sand down the edges. Their vision was simple: put NYC on stage as it is.

The Work exists to honor the grit and beauty of New York stories—built from sidewalks, rehearsal rooms, and the electric quiet right before the lights come up.
